Dozens of boats and RVs destroyed after storage unit fire in Palm Harbor

PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Between 40 and 48 boats, cars, trucks and RV's were destroyed after a fire ripped through the Florida West Storage Facility business in Palm Harbor early Wednesday morning, according to officials with Palm Harbor Fire Rescue.

Crews responded to the storage business at 4450 US Alt-19 just after midnight to find a building burning and collapsed.

Palm Harbor Deputy Chief Bob Markford says there is millions of dollars worth of damage and at least 80 victims at this time.  Deputy Chief Markford says every vehicle in the center storage building at the business has been damaged beyond repair.

"Very disappointing," says Jay Reed who lost his $90,000 RV in the blaze.  "I can see right where it is and I know there's nothing left of it and it's a shame."

Fire officials were still working to put out hot spots at the unit into Wednesday afternoon.

The owner of the storage facility, Jim Goddz, says each individual who rents space at the facility has to show their items are insured.  He says he also has insurance of his own.  Goddz says he has been using much of the day to contact owners about their property loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
