PCSO: Scooter driver dead in Dunedin after cutting through traffic, colliding with vehicle

DUNEDIN, Fla. - The driver of a scooter is dead after being trapped under a vehicle he collided with after cutting through traffic in Dunedin on Sunday, according to investigators.

Pinellas County Sheriff's spokesperson Cristen Rensel said a preliminary investigation showed a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, driven by Rashied Jones, 39, was eastbound on State Road 580, near Belcher Road, as a Honda scooter, driven by Gordon Haboush, 57, of Dunedin, was northbound on Belcher Road, near SR-850, around 10:35 a.m.

As the scooter approached the vehicle, Haboush reportedly drove through stopped vehicles, into a curb lane and into the right turn lane.

Haboush went into the path of Jones and collided with the Jeep, according to the PCSO report, trapping the scooter and Haboush under the vehicle.

He was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene. Jones was not injured.

SR-580 was closed to eastbound traffic for approximately 4 hours during the investigation. All lanes have since reopened.
