Suspect hits officer with car and flees, officer sustains minor injuries

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A Clearwater officer received minor injuries after the driver of a car filled with drugs and weapons hit the officer with his car Thursday morning, according to a report from the City of Clearwater.

Officers were sent to Ross Norton Apartments after a report was made regarding a car with several men inside waving guns.   

Police arrived at 12:25 a.m., and when an officer got out of his cruiser, 23-year-old Derrick Scudder drove the vehicle described in the report straight toward the officer.

The officer tried to jump out of the way but he was hit by the passenger mirror and passenger side of the vehicle, resulting in minor injuries.

Other officers initiated a pursuit of the suspect's vehicle, which had two other men inside. 

The chase ended at Druid Road and US 19  when Scudder crashed the vehicle.

Scudder and the two other men fled on foot.

K-9 units tracked the suspects to Lowe's at Clearwater Mall.

The sheriff's office Eagle helicopter spotted two suspects on the roof. 

Officers called Clearwater Fire & Rescue and gain access to the roof by a ladder truck.

Officers then took the suspects into custody.

Multiple guns and drugs were found in the vehicle.

Scudder was charged with Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Felon in Possession of Firearm, Possession of Stolen Firearm, Felony Driving with a suspended license and  Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute Possession of Crack Cocaine.

The second suspect who was also in the car, 25-year-old Barry Miller, was arrested.

Miller was charged with Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer/Vehicle Pursuit, possession of a seized 2012 Volvo, 40 caliber Glock (stolen), 40 Caliber S&W, 9 mm Glock Extended 30 round magazine, 8 pounds of Marijuana, 5 grams crack cocaine and 1 1/2 grams of MDMA.

Detectives are currently working to identify the third suspect.
