Clearwater Police: Infant badly injured during domestic dispute

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A seven-week-old infant was seriously injured when he was dropped by his mother while she was being choked by her husband, Clearwater police say.

Thomas Reinke, 40, is charged with aggravated child abuse and domestic battery by strangulation.

Reinke is accused of choking his wife while she held the child at their home on Parkstream Drive around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

She began to lose consciousness and dropped the infant, according to a police statement. The child's head struck the floor.

He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa where he was treated for bleeding from the brain, a skull fracture and a broken arm.

The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Reinke was held at the Pinellas County Jail.
