Clearwater firefighters frees trapped construction worker

Construction work in Clearwater left one man trapped Friday afternoon.

A 32-year-old construction worker for Earth Friendly Construction became trapped after a piece of machinery similar to a Bobcat flipped into an open elevator shaft and came to rest on one of his legs, according to Clearwater Fire Rescue.

The agency received a report of the incident about 3 p.m.

With the help of special air bags, the rescue team was able to slowly lift the huge piece of machinery off his leg.

The man, who lives in Brooksville, was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg with a severe lower left leg injury, firefighters said.

The building where the incident occurred at 400 Cleveland St. is a former bank building.
