Clearwater police searching for attempted carjacking suspect

Man tried to take vehicle from mother outside mall

CLEARWATER - Detectives are searching for a man who tried to carjack a mother at gunpoint Sunday outside the Westfield Countryside Mall.

The man approached the 24-year-old Largo mother and her two preschool-aged children about 1 p.m. near their vehicle parked between JCPenny and Macy's, according to Clearwater Police Department. He showed her a gun, pulled back the slide and demanded her vehicle.

As the mother pleaded with him not to hurt her or her children, a car pulled into a nearby parking space, startling him. He ran south and then headed west on Countryside Boulevard.

The suspect was between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-9 with a medium build, shaved face and short black hair. Security video from the mall didn't capture the attempted crime, but shows the man in the mall prior to the incident.
