CARROLLWOOD - Kindergartners across the state of Florida, including those in Carrollwood elementary schools, will be introduced to a curriculum that focuses on sexual abuse prevention Thursday.
State leaders have partnered with Lauren Book, a survivor of sexual abuse who is now advocating the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum to educate children about sexual predators and how to secure their personal safety, according to a Carrollwood Patch report.
The curriculum has been sent to every kindergarten classroom in Florida, the first state to add sexual abuse prevention curriculum in classes.
The curriculum is broken into six half-hour lessons that cover several topics including safety awareness, body boundaries and accessing help.
The Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum was created by Lauren's Kids, Book's nonprofit organization, with the help of a child psychologist.
The program was used in Miami schools for years before Florida legislature decided to use the curriculum across the state.
