Technology has become more of a necessity than a luxury, but for most of us, we are spending more money on gadgets than we need too.

Local tech experts like Mitch Neff will go back to the most used cliche, "if it sounds too good to be true, it is."

For over 20 years Neff has followed the cyber world -- from scams to upgrades to over priced gadgets.

One way you may be wasting your money is renting an internet modem from your service provider.

"Your internet service provider has to allow you to bring your own modem if its compatible with their system," said Neff.

Also, USA Today breaks down the five tech things that are a waste of money here.

Neff agrees with the article when it comes to paying too much for cables, especially your HDMI.

In general the cable should not cost you more than $10-$15.

"This is a digital signal, there's literally no science left that anyone could support paying $250 for a HDMI cable."

Last, if you're paying extra for car navigation systems through a subscription, check to see if your smart phone is compatible with your vehicle.
