BRANDON - A Hillsborough elementary school caught fire after lightning struck the roof during severe weather, a Fire Rescue detective has confirmed.
Fire crews responded to calls of a fire at Mintz Elementary School, located on 1510 Heather Lakes Boulevard in Brandon Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters saw smoke coming from the ceiling area inside one of the classrooms with no visible flames. Crew members went to the roof to investigate and saw light smoke coming from the same area above the class room. They cut a 4x3 hole in the roof, found small flames and quickly extinguished them.
There was an active thunderstorm before and during the incident, and a complete investigation determined lightning hit the building, causing fire.
No students were in the building at the time of the incident and no injuries have been reported. Four classrooms sustained water damage, plus the hole that had to be cut in the roof.
The school will be open tomorrow.
