TPD off duty officer and Hernando Sheriff's deputy involved in fatal shooting

SPRING HILL, Fla. - Two off duty officers were involved in a fatal shooting Saturday afternoon, Hernando County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman, Lt. Cinda Moore reports.

According to Lt. Moore, the shooting happened at  9070 Orchard Parkway in Spring Hill while the officers were there for a social gathering.

Officials say Rocky Howard, an off duty Hernando County Sheriff deputy, and  William Mechler, an off duty Tampa police officer opened fire on a naked woman who was reportedly armed and out of control.

The woman allegedly confronted the law Enforcement officers with a weapon. Both opened fire on her with their issued fire arms as she started to near them with the weapon.

The woman died of her injuries at the scene.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.

Officer Howard, 31, is a six year veteran with Hernando Sheriff's office.

Officer Mechler, 26, has been employed by the Tampa police department for four years.
