Tip reopens 1994 murder case

CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. - Citrus County sheriff's deputies and detectives are entering day four of processing a half acre, wooded site off West Balloon Lane in Crystal River. They are working off a new tip and looking for clues in the 1994 missing persons case of Margo Register, then 19 years old.

Authorities are sifting dirt, dredging ditches and using cadaver dogs. They said no clues or indicators of remains have turned up.

Detectives said Margo Register vanished after a day of arguing with her husband, Willis Register, and a trip to a liquor store. Willis told authorities when he came back out of the store, his wife was gone.

Detectives were brought to the wooded site following up on a new lead. They said a former friend of the couple recently claimed he saw Willis Register and the body of Margo, together, in the wooded area.

Willis Register is currently serving prison time on an unrelated murder case. Detectives said Willis Register is aware of the new tip and denies any involvement in his wife's disappearance.

Margo still has family living in Citrus County.

"I made a promise to the family that I would help them come to a final answer on this. They're pretty much aware the end result on this is not going to be a good result, but they really want some closure," said Detective Corey Sharpe.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office asked that additional tips be called into 888-ANY-TIPS.
