Hernando County deputy shoots man after attack

SPRING HILL, Fla. - A Hernando County deputy was attacked by a man authorities said was "extremely aggressive" Wednesday night.

Deputy Ramona Fuhs shot Joseph Ryan Berrios as she responded to a suspicious person call in Spring Hill.

Deputy Fuhs  made contact with Berrios near Candler Ave and Fortune Street at 11:30 p.m., according to a report from Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Berrios got aggressive and attacked Deputy Fuhs, forcing her fire.

Berrios was taken to a trauma center with non-life threatening injuries.

Neighbors said they heard a man yelling obscenities right before they noticed deputies responding to the scene.

One person ABC Action News spoke with said the yelling actually started a block over.

"I heard a man pounding on a neighbors door, I heard him cussing and whatnot so I went back inside," neighbor Dawn Hyatt said.

She looked out again and saw police lights.

Tony Rolo was trying to put himself to bed when he heard the commotion.

"We heard shouting, then I looked out the window and then two gunshots rang out, he said,  "It was a female deputy standing over what looked like a younger guy."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will review the use of deadly force and has taken over this investigation.

The incident is also under review by HCSO Internal Affairs.
