CITRUS SPRINGS, Fla. - A man suspected of domestic violence was killed Tuesday night in a shootout with deputies in Citrus Springs.
Deputies said David James Barclay, 41, of Dunnellon, went to the home of his estranged wife to see his son. He was armed with a gun and forced his way into the home.
The 34-year-old victim and her 3-year-old son were home at the time. In addition, a female roommate and her young child were also in the house. While Barclay spoke with his wife, the roommate crawled out of a window with her child and called for help.
When deputies arrived and surrounded the home, the SWAT team was called because Barclay remained inside with his wife and son. When he left, Barclay shot at deputies, who returned fire. Barclay died at the scene.
There were no other injuries.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, as per protocol.
The four deputies who returned fire at Barclay have been placed on paid administrative leave until the FDLE review is complete.
