HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. -
A man accused of killing his brother and burying him on the side of his parents' house has been found guilty of second-degree murder.
It took jurors two-and-a-half hours to reach their decision. Stanley Eckard, now 24 years-old, showed no emotion when the verdict was handed down. But, his family members cried and consoled each other for ten minutes, before leaving the courtroom.
Arrest affidavits say Stanley and 19-year-old Sean were fighting on June 19, 2010. Stanley admitted to strangling his brother, then falling to the ground with him, as he died. Their father found his body the day after Father's Day.
Family members say they are content with today's verdict. Debbie Echavarry, Stanley's great aunt, was in the courtroom. Echavarry said, "I feel that justice has been served. I love my niece and I feel very bad and I feel very bad about that we have to go through this."
During the trial, which began Monday, prosecutors argued Stanley plotted to kill Sean that day, but the defense claimed that was not his intention.
Sentencing is scheduled for May 13. Eckard faces 25 years to life in prison.
