Off-duty Citrus County deputy shoots, kills sex offender in his home, agencies investigating

INVERNESS - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's Office are investigating an officer-involved shooting in an off-duty Citrus County deputy's home Tuesday night.

Authorities have identified the man who broke into the deputy's Inverness home as 28-year-old Derrick Vaccianna, a registered sex offender, according to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy and his girlfriend were inside the home when Vaccianna confronted them, but authorities said the incident was not a random act, they all knew each other.

After a verbal confrontation and fight, the deputy shot the man in his chest.

He was taken to Citrus Memorial Health System, where he later died.

Vaccianna was on probation at the time of his death.

Because this was a deputy-involved shooting, FDLE and the State Attorney's Office is spearheading the investigation.  Officials are now treating the incident as a burglary that led up to a shooting death.

The deputy's identity and status is pending on his interview, scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
