Hernando deputy injured in hit-and-run crash

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. - A Hernando County deputy was listed in fair condition Monday after his patrol car was broadsided by another vehicle early Saturday morning.

The two people in the other car fled the scene and were later captured.

The crash occurred around 4:45 a.m. at the intersection of US 301 and Cortez Boulevard.

Deputy James Baker was traveling westbound on Cortez when the driver's side of his cruiser was hit by a car traveling north on 301.

The two people in the northbound car took off, deputies said.

One of them was located by an officer on the ground and the other was spotted was located by an aviation unit.

Both were taken back to the scene of the crash. They have not been identified.

Deputy Baker was flown by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. There was no immediate word on the extent of his injuries.

The crash investigation is being handled by the Florida Highway Patrol.
