BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - Accuform Signs employs 280 people at their Brooksville facility. They make industrial signs for companies around the world.
Shawn Keller worked his way up from the production line to accounting. He says he loves working here. "Number one, they understand for me that family comes first. And I'm a single parent so that's the most important thing. I'd give up compensation elsewhere, just for the fact that they understand my kids come first and they allow me to deal with that."
The family-owned company doubled in size over the last five years. Now they say it's time to expand again.
Thursday they unveiled plans for an all new $15-million facility that will be as big as two and a half Sam's Clubs.
They will also add 271 jobs by 2016.
"It means an awful lot that we are able to bring more families together. That we are able to provide those jobs for that people," said CEO Wayne Johnson.
Governor Rick Scott, whose campaign centered on getting Floridians back to work, came to Brooksville for the announcement.
"Everybody was involved, the county commissioners, Enterprise Florida which is your state public-private partnership. Everybody was involved to make something happen here," said Governor Scott.
Accuform's owners looked at other options, including moving their business out of state. But they say Florida's incentives made staying the best thing to do.
"They provided incentives that are based on per employees that we hire, so we have some skin in this game to. We have to hire the people we said we were going to hire or really the incentives don't really apply," said Johnson.
The decision to stay and grow in Hernando County is great news for so many in the area who are out of work.
Accuform's current workers are also excited about what's happening here.
"It's phenomenal, especially considering the economy right now. This place has thrived in a poor economy. I think we've hired a hundred people in the two years I've been here," said Keller
The new building should be finished by early 2014. That's when officials say most of the hiring will take place.
