A retired high school history teacher was arrested and accused of going to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex.
Deputies said Robert Edward Smith engaged in long-term computer chats with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl. During the conversations, he asked to meet her. The two agreed to meet at a Brooksville hotel for sex.
Smith, 61, described his car to the child, and planned to meet at 2:00 p.m. Deputies arrested Smith before the meeting could take place.
Smith is charged with Attempted Lewd and Lascivious Behavior, Traveling to Meet/Seduce a Minor, and Using a Computer to Solicit a Minor with a bond of $2,000.
"Words cannot express how disgusting it is to think that this person was attempting to prey upon a vulnerable child," said Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis. "Our citizens can rest assured that we will continually work to do everything reasonable to keep child predators away from our children and behind bars where they belong."
The Sheriff's Office is investigating to learn if are other victims.
