Driver identified in crash that injures Hernando County deputy

DADE CITY, Fla. - A Hernando County Sheriff deputy was flown to Tampa General hospital Saturday morning after being involved in an early morning crash.

Deputy James Baker was driving down Cortez Boulevard approaching U.S. 301 around 4:45 a.m. when his patrol car was hit by an oncoming car. Baker was hit on the driver side door.

Hernando County Fire Rescue treated Baker for some injuries at the scene, but he was later flown to Tampa General hospital for further medical attention. 

After the car hit Deputy Baker the driver and a passenger got out of the car and fled from the area. With the assistance of Hernando County Sheriff's helicopter, deputies were able to locate both people and take them back to the scene.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Chelsey Carmody, 26, of Dade City.  She has been charged with one count of failing to stop at a crash and one count driving with suspended or revoked license.

Florida Highway Patrol is continuing the investigation.
