Campaign: Former U.S. Senator George LeMieux dropping out of this year's Senate race in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Former U.S. Senator George LeMieux is dropping out of this year's Senate race in Florida.

LeMieux says he doesn't have the financial resources to get his message out against Connie Mack, who leads the race by a wide margin according to polls.

Two weeks ago, LeMieux said he was running against 100 years of name recognition because Mack's father was a popular U.S. Senator and his great-grandfather is in the baseball Hall of Fame.

LeMieux says continuing his campaign would hurt Republican chances against incumbent Democratic  U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson so LeMieux says he's throwing his support behind Mack.

LeMieux served 16 months in the U.S. Senate after being appointed to the job by former Gov. Charlie Crist.
