Pasco school official faces child porn charges

FBI raided home, found 100 porn discs

Kenneth Dempsey had worked for Pasco County schools since 1987 and had no disciplinary record.  So it came as a surprise to school officials that his house was raided by the FBI and more than a 100 discs containing child porn were seized from his property.

"It's horrifying. It's shocking," said Linda Cobbe, spokeswoman for the Pasco School District. "There is a good likelihood that he may have been alone with children."

While Dempsey, 52, hasn't been charged with abusing kids, agents did charged him with receipt and possession of child pornography, a federal offense.

Dempsey is an assistant site manager for a daycare program at Schrader Elementary in Port Richey. It's part of the PLACE program, which stands for Pasco Learning and Activity Centers of Enrichment.

The program's director sent out a robocall to parents alerting them of the arrest, and encouraged them to contact the FBI if they believed Dempsey had committed any inappropriate behavior.

"I'm very concerned," said Joy Lance, who's child waits at a bus stop every week day just a block from Dempsey's house.

"I'm concerned that this neighborhood is not clean of child predators," Lance said.

Another parent said it was disturbing that Dempsey lived next to a park, was an administrator for a school daycare program, and had recently adopted a 6-year-old son.

Mel Levesque, who lives a few doors down from Dempsey, said he noticed that his neighbor was obsessed with cutting his lawn every day. Levesque said Dempsey would drive every morning up and down the street looking at his neighbors' property, as if he was doing a security check.

But rarely did Dempsey wave or say hello.

"If he sees you he goes straight by," Levesque said.

The FBI said Dempsey was part of a group on the Shutterfly website that had 17,000 child pornography photos, most of them of young boys. Agents accused Dempsey of uploading 19 photos and several videos of boys engaged in sexual activity.

Dempsey is expected to make a federal court appearance Thursday. The school district will meet next month to review his job status in light of the child porn charges.
