ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A knife-wielding man was shot and killed by police in St. Louis Tuesday afternoon, just miles from the suburb of Ferguson, the scene of recent violent protests.
The suspect, a 23-year-old African American, was shot when he refused to drop a knife from a raised position, St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson told reporters.
The man, according to Dotson, was acting "erratically" and said to two officers, "Shoot me now. Kill me now."
As he was told to drop the weapon, he approached the officers. At least one officer opened fire when the suspect was about three or four feet away, Dotson said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In Ferguson, the shooting death of an unarmed teen earlier this month sparked violent nightly protests.
