AAA projects Labor Day holiday weekend travel should be highest in six years

TAMPA - AAA South is projecting more than 1.7 million Floridians will hit the roads, skies or waterways for the 2014 Labor Day holiday weekend.

Nationwide the auto agency project over 34 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home this weekend, the highest volume in five years and a 1.3 percent increase over 2013.

"Gas prices are down and consumer spending is up, which should help generate the most travelers for the Labor Day holiday since the record setting 45 million in 2008," said Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman.

AAA says a major reason for the increase in travel is more Americans are comfortable using their credit cards to finance one last summer vacation this year.
