WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. - A Tennessee deputy lost his wife after a 4-year-old shot her dead with the deputy's gun, according to a report from The Tennessean.com.
The child got his hands on the gun after the off-duty deputy put his weapon down during a family cookout Saturday, police say.
Wilson County Deputy Daniel Fanning was with another relative looking at guns in the bedroom of his home.
The deputy's wife, Josephine Fanning, and the 4-year-old, a family relative, walked into the bedroom. The child picked up a loaded gun that was on top of a bed and shot one round, killing Josephine.
The gun was the deputy's personal weapon, not a police gun, officials say.
Alcohol was served at the gathering.
The incident is under investigation.
