Teen dies after jumping from school bus

Last Update: 1/19 10:49 pm

ST PETERSBURG, FL -- Police say as a St Petersburg High School bus was dropping off its students on Wednesday, one student jumped off the bus and eventually passed away.

Police say the 1992 international school bus #860 left St Petersburg High School to drop off its students on Wednesday when several students became disruptive.

The bus driver, Kurt Kenneth Kane warned students to behave, but they didn't listen. So Kane, 59, contacted his supervisors and returned to the school. He wanted an administrator standing by just in case.

As the bus was turning around onto 9th Avenue North from 28th Street, one of the students moved to the rear seat and told several other students he was getting off the bus.

Police say as the bus accelerated, Joshua Sage unlatched the emergency door, opened it and jumped out.

Kane said the rear door alarm went off so he started braking but he could not stop the bus before the student jumped out. He estimated the bus was going about 20 miles per hour at the time of the accident.

Police say Sage was initially found unconscious in the street. But as St Petersburg Fire Rescue personnel worked on Sage, he regained consciousness.

Sage was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where he died early Monday morning.
