TAMPA, FL -- Darren Pickney was walking to work at Pipo's Cafe in West Tampa when he heard the growling. He looked over his shoulder and realized he was in trouble. Two full grown pit bulls were staring at him.
"They come charging full bore. Teeth out ready to go," Pickney said. "What was amazing was one of the dogs has already got blood in his teeth so that means he bit somebody before me."
Pickney jumped up on a pick up truck to escape. A Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy was not as lucky.
Deputy Jack Brock arrived at the home where the pit bulls lived to serve an eviction notice. He had no idea the dangerous dogs were running loose until they charged him. Brock started climbing over a fence to get away, but one of the dogs "latched on to his leg," Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.
By that time Tampa Police had arrived on scene. officer Steve Leteri shot and killed one pit bull. A second dog was taken by Hillsborough County Animal Control.
Deputy Jack Brock was treated and released from a local hospital. He declined to talk about the incident.
Pickney said, "I hate pit bulls. I mean I love dogs, but not pit bulls."
