TAMPA, FL -- Andrea Law, a Tampa Police officer with two-and-a-half years experience on the force, was critically injured in a car crash in Cozumel, Mexico, Chief Jane Castor said.

Law was vacationing in Mexico, Castor said.  She and four friends had rented a Jeep and were involved in a wreck Wednesday.  Law was thrown from the vehicle.

A jet flew her back to the Bay area.  A helicopter then airlifted her to Tampa General Hospital.

Law was listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon.  According to Castor, she suffered a lacerated liver in the wreck.  Doctors used surgical glue to try and rectify the condition.  Law is now in a medically-induced coma.

“She’s very critical and the next few days are going to tell,” Castor said. “(But) she’s young. She’s very strong. She’s very healthy. And people survive these kinds of injuries.”

Law recently became the school resource officer at Stewart Middle School in Tampa. She was an officer in St. Petersburg before joining the Tampa Police Department in 2007.

“She’s a very well respected officer,” Castor said. “It’s a big concern because it’s a family member. She’s a part of our family.”
