Tampa man helps catch armed carjacker

Last Update: 6/18 8:55 pm

TAMPA, FL -- A Tampa man chased an armed carjacker after being pistol-whipped early Thursday morning.

Police say Alfonso Conston was outside his girlfriend's house on West Chestnut around 2 a.m. when he saw someone trying to steal his Nissan Altima.

He confronted the suspect, but was hit from behind by a second suspect, who ran off.  That gave the first suspect time to drive off in Conston's car.

Conston's girlfriend's car called 911 while he was in pursuit.  A short time later, the suspect wrecked the Nissan near North Boulevard and Holmes.

Officers caught the suspect and charged the 17-year-old with armed carjacking, fleeing and eluding, hit and run, resisting arrest and no valid drivers license.

The second suspect is still on the loose.

Constant suffered a minor head injury.
