TAMPA, FL -- A suspect is in custody for shooting at a deputy early Friday morning.

A Hillsborough Sheriff's Office spokesperson says deputies responded to a call at the Shadow Oaks Apartments at Fletcher and Florida Avenue after two people were spotted breaking into cars.

Deputies arrived after 4 a.m. Friday, and one of the men ran in front of one deputy, firing a shot that struck his patrol car's windshield. It missed the deputy, but broken glass from the windshield stuck him, causing minor injuries.

shots were fired at the deputies. One of the shots broke glass, which struck one the deputies.

Deputy Paulo Santos-Rizzo was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital to be checked out. He has been employed by Hillsborough County since 2006.

Deputies did not fire their weapons.

A perimeter was set up to search for the suspects. The process closed parts of Florida Avenue.

Jeffrey Lee Ervin was arrested shortly after the incident. Detectives say Ervin was still armed when he was found by a K-9 named "Deuce". Ervin fought with the K-9 and was bitten by the dog in the right bicep and left leg.

The Sheriff's Office says Ervin is the man who shot at the deputy, and that another suspect is still on the loose.

Roads re-opened about 9 a.m.
