Students go to prom in duct tape outfits

Last Update: 7/04 11:39 am

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – A pair of juniors at St. Petersburg Collegiate High School hopes a project featuring Duck brand duct tape will land them some college scholarship money.

Every year the makers of Duck brand duct tape invite students to enter their Stuck at Prom scholarship competition. Students spend months making prom outfits out of duct tape.

Sixteen year old Amie Gerodimos and seventeen year old Tresson Canley began working on their outfits in November and finished the clothes in April.  The two used more than 40 rolls of tape.

For Gerodimos’ dress, they painted the tape to give it a pearlescent pink tone. There are also shades of yellow, lavender pearl, purple, white and black. Gerodimos’ dress also features more than 400 individually crafted flowers.

Gerodimos’ major is biochemistry with a minor in mathematics. She wants to be a surgeon or chemical engineer and hopes to attend Brown University. Canley hopes to pursue a career in fashion journalism and wants to be a fashion magazine editor. He hopes to attend New York University.

The scholarship program may help both realize their dreams. Both first prize winners will receive a cash scholarship of $3,000. The first prize school will also receive $3,000. Second prize is $2,000 and third prize is $1,000.

Winners will be announced on July 9. For more information on the contest or to see photos of all the couples and their outfits visit the Stuck at Prom website.
