State subpoenas insurer for info on policyholders

Last Update: 1/29/2009 5:21 pm

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- State Farm Florida wants out of Florida, but first Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty wants a detailed review of the company's property insurance customers.

McCarty subpoenaed the Illinois-based insurer Thursday as part of the Office of Insurance Regulation's review of State Farm's request to withdraw from the property insurance market in Florida.

The subpoena seeks names, addresses, policy types, policy limits and premium information for State Farm's Florida policyholders.

State Farm Florida, a subsidiary of State Farm Mutual, is the largest private property insurer in the state with some 1.2 million customers.

The company said Tuesday it would face insolvency if it continued writing property insurance in Florida.
