ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- Lawn maintenance workers at Tropicana Field heard a beeping sound coming from a cabinet Wednesday in a room near Gate 2 that is closed to the public.

The workers checked the cabinet and discovered a box inside, taped down to a shelf, with wires protruding from it, making it appear like an explosive device.  The employees notified the police.

Within minutes, a man employed as a mechanic with the Tampa Bay Rays came forward and admitted to planting the device as a practical joke.

As a precaution, the Tampa Bomb Squad responded to the scene and confirmed the device was a hoax.

The employee, William L. Jordan, was arrested and will face a second degree felony.

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox Wednesday night 8 to 5.
