ST.PETERSBURG, FL -- St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue is investigating the cause of a garage fire.

The fire took place around 9am on Thursday at 936 19th Ave. South. Responders found a two story wood frame garage apartment with heavy smoke and fire showing from the windows when they arrived on scene.

Fire crews moved quickly to ensure that no one was trapped inside the apartment by making a quick and aggressive interior attack.  The fire was so intense and potentially dangerous to firefighters that acting District Chief Robert Bassett pulled firefighters out and changed operations to a safer aggressive defensive attack.

The fire was burning through the roof and extended to the first floor, which was a three car garage.  No one was at home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

A fire investigator is on scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

The fair market value of the garage and apartment is $67,000 and damage estimates are approximately $50,000.
