TAMPA, FL -- Panting may be the natural way a dog cools down, but on a hot day like Saturday, at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, dogs like Jenkins take a dip in the water.
Tracy Smith says Saturday's heat advisory meant closing off the kennels and keeping the dogs inside.
"We don't want anything to cause a stroke for them." Smith said.
Saturday temperatures rose to the nineties, and the lone maintenance man for Metropolitan Ministries, Paul Grimminger, is cleaning out AC units so those in need can use this building to cool off - for free.
The four volunteers helping him out, say they'll keep working, despite the high temps.
"It feels good to come out here, like we're doing now, cleaning up the air conditioning, so everybody can feel cool. I just like helping. It's fun to make other people feel good." explains James Eliassaint.
And on Hillsborough Avenue, Ronal Johnson is getting paid to tell you about a furniture sale while standing in the scorching heat. "The heat is just going to take a toll, but i'll be alright though. As long as i've got my water."
This is his first job in eight months, so with his sign, towel, water, and positive attitude, he's determined to beat the heat.
The temperature throughout the Tampa area was in the 90's for most of the afternoon, but with the heat index, it felt like it was over 100 degrees. Forecasters say expect more of the same on Father's Day.
