VENICE, FL -- A Venice woman was shot and killed by her estranged husband Monday afternoon, sheriff’s deputies said.

According to Wendy Rose, public information officer with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, the estranged husband was later killed by a North Port police officer.

The first shooting occurred in the back parking lot at the Robert L. Anderson Administration Center in Venice mid-afternoon on Monday. The complex houses a courthouse as well as other government buildings.

Rose said Alan Provencal, 69, shot and killed his estranged wife Carolyn Provencal, 69. No one else in the parking lot was injured.

police officers later spotted Alan Provencal in his car driving home. They confronted him in an area between his garage and his house.

“He would not heed verbal commands to put down his firearm,” Rose said. “When he raised it at officers, he was shot twice by North Port police officers.”

Alan Provencal died at his house.

Chris Knotts, a neighbor of Provencal, described him as a “nice” and “quiet” man. “He’s a good guy,” Knotts said. “It doesn’t seem like he would do anything at all.”

Sarasota County deputies would not release details on how the shooting in the parking lot happened or whether the Provencals were there for a court appearance.
