CLEARWATER, FL -- A 7-year old boy is clinging to life after the car he was riding in ran a red light, Clearwater Police said.

Investigators said a Ford Explorer was headed east on Cleveland Street when the driver, Filiberto Belmont, ran a red light at Belcher Road and collided with a pick-up truck just before 9 o'clock.

7-year-old Alan Asmitia was riding in a back cargo area when he was ejected from the rear of the SUV, according to detectives.  The child went through the glass and struck a concrete light pole.

He was not in a seat and was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

After being ejected, police said Asmitia became pinned between a light pole and a third car that was hit by the pick-up.

He was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The road was not reopened until 12:45 am. The investigation is on-going and charges have yet to be filed.
