TAMPA, FL  -- Two people accused of drag racing on the Courtney Campbell Causeway early Sunday morning both had toddlers in their cars as they were driving, according to arrest reports.

Tampa Police say 29-year-old James Maymi and 23-year-old Virgen Lopez were racing each other about 1/4 mile east of the Bay Harbor boat ramp, reaching speeds of between 90 and 100 miles per hour, around 2:30 am.

There was a 20-month-old child and a 2-year-old in Maymi's 1990 Acura, while Lopez's passenger in her 1988 Honda was a 2-year-old, their arrest reports said.

Their relationships to the children were not released in the reports. Maymi told officers he didn't have a driver's license, his car didn't have a tag and it wasn't registered to him.

Both were charged with unlawful racing on a highway, while Maymi was also charged with not having a driver's license and operating an unregistered vehicle, all misdemeanors.

Maymi and Lopez were released after posting $1,000 and $500 bonds respectively.
