On January 7th, 1789, the first president of the United States was elected. Americans voted for electors who, one month later, chose George Washington to be the nation's first president. 

In 1927, commercial transatlantic telephone service was inaugurated between New York and London.

In 1962, "The Twist" by Chubby Checker hit number one on the pop charts for the second time. The song went to number one first back in 1960.

In 1994, Nirvana played their last U.S. show, at the Seattle Arena.
