FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Officials say black bear shot in the head and killed in southwest Florida near Fort Myers was not acting in a threatening manner.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials say a man shot the bear on his property in San Carlos Park on Thursday.

Officials say the man, who was arrested, told them that the bear was not threatening people or property or was attempting to do so when he shot it.

The Florida black bear is a threatened species. Killing one is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in jail and $5,000 in fines.
