TAMPA, FL -- Polk and Pasco Counties have them, and now Hillsborough County will find red light runners with the help of cameras.
The highly traveled intersection of Dale Mabry and Waters Avenue got cameras Thursday night.
Hillsborough County Sheriff spokesman Larry McKinnon says not everyone is cautious and since this intersection is one of the worst for accidents and red light runners, it seemed a logical place to start.
"We feel saving the lives and preventing these injuries is more important. The County isn't getting a dime out of this, it all goes to the general fund", said McKinnon.
But not all drivers buy into the concept and think it's another way for Big Brother to make a buck.
Ten intersections will be up and running in the next few weeks, but if a driver blows through a red light and it is caught on camera then the driver will get a warning, that is unless a member of law enforcement witnesses it.
After the 60 days of warning, the fine will be $125 starting December 30th.
