TAMPA, FL -- Most parents in Hillsborough County plan to have their children vaccinated for the swine flu, according to results released Tuesday by the school district.
A phone survey conducted Monday found 55 percent of people who responded planned to have their children vaccinated, while 24 percent did not and 21 percent were undecided. A total of 134,588 calls were made for the survey, with 25,551 people answering survey questions.
The Hillsborough County Health Department began administering the first vaccine to students on Tuesday. Children from Caminiti, Lavoy, Willis Peters and Eisenhower exceptional student education (ESE) centers were the first to receive it.
The county plans to give out the vaccine at middle and high schools during the school day the week of October 26. Schools scheduled for that week include Freedom, Newsome, Steinbrenner and East Bay high schools and Liberty, Randall and Eisenhower middle schools.
Elementary school students with signed consent forms and who are accompanied by a parent or guardian can receive flu vaccines Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Leto, Jefferson and Armwood high schools as well as Bowers-Whitley Career Center.
