Mom recalls fear when son didn't get off school bus

LAND O LAKES, FL -- Ever since losing her husband to a heart attack 6-months ago, April Ace has lived for her kids.

Getting them to the school bus every morning requires a routine.

"I always say I'll see you after school. Momma picks you up today," Ace said.

But when Ace went to the bus stop after school Monday, her son Zavier did not get off.

"People telling me they don't know where he is. Nobody could give me any answers. A lot of things go through your head, a nightmare.”

April was terrified.

Then a phone call came from 3 miles away saying her five year old was found.

Little Zavier, through no fault of his own, got on the wrong bus and off at the wrong stop.

“They told me you're not green bus or day care bus so you're going to have to go on black bus,” Zavier said.

A spokesman for the Pasco County School District, Terry Ruhm, tells us bus drivers are supposed to look at each child before he gets on the bus and admits that Zavier might have slipped on while the driver was distracted.

Ruhm says they're still investigating but it’s unlikely anyone will be reprimanded. They do plan to review policy.

Stumbling through his math problems, its clear Zavier still has a lot to learn.

And, his mom says the people responsible for his safety do too.

“They need to have something in place. More than what they have,” Ace said.
