BRADENTON, FL -- Manatee Health officials say there is an active case of tuberculosis within the county's school system.

For privacy reasons, the person's identity is not being released.

Officials say the person has spent time at both Lakewood Ranch High School and Nolan Middle School.

The individual is being treated and can no longer spread the disease, according to health officials.

Exposed persons were notified by the end of school and have been offered free skin tests and, if they test positive, free chest x-rays.

TB attacks the lungs and is spread from person to person through the air.  Germs that are breathed in by someone with TB can cause the infection to spread, but it usually takes repeated contact.

TB can spread among family members and those who work closely together, but most people do not develop TB who have been exposed because their bodies are able to fight it.
