PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -- Authorities say deputies spotted the driver of a Mustang racing along Gulf Boulevard late Wednesday night and tried to stop the driver.

They say the driver not only refused to stop but taunted the members of law enforcement by running "donuts" in front of them.

The driver rammed a deputy's patrol car before stopping near 191st Avenue on Gulf Boulevard. Deputies tried a "Pit Maneuver" to stop the wayward driver.

As Indian Shores Police and Pinellas County Deputies approached, the driver started firing shots toward them. One of the shots hit one of the patrol cars.

The deputies exchanged gun fire with the driver, killing him. Witnesses say they heard "pop, pop, pop" and knew this wasn't someone setting off fireworks.

Three deputies and one Indian Shores Police officer have been placed on paid leave which is not unusual when it comes to police involved shootings.

Investigators remain at the shooting scene on Gulf Boulevard which will keep traffic restricted Thursday morning.

No officers were hurt.

Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
