WEEKI WACHEE, FL -- Hernando County Sheriff's deputies say a man who appeared to be drunk tried to crawl through the drive through window of a convenience store and punch the store clerk. It turned out to be a mistake. The clerk was armed with a big stick and a .357 magnum handgun.
Richard Schneider has been charged with disorderly intoxication. According to sheriff's deputies, Schneider became abusive in the D & T General Store, so the store clerk asked him to leave and locked the door.
Clerk Dennis Brooks told ABC Action News, the suspect walked around to the drive through window, started climbing through and began punching Brooks in the face. As soon as Schneider landed one that bloodied Brooks' lip, Brooks said he picked up "a little stick to take care of business." Brooks says he "popped" Schneider with the two foot long, two inch thick piece of oak and Schneider climbed back outside.
Deputies say Schneider was still trying to get in the store when they got on scene.
Brooks says he was prepared to use his .357 magnum, "If he'd have got in the store, he wouldn't have woke up in jail. He'd have woke up in the morgue."
