TAMPA, FL -- Local vets in Tampa Bay have been giving folks a call, recommending that their dogs be vaccinated for dog influenza. The AVMA says the canine or dog influenza started in racing greyhound tracks in Florida in January 2004 but has been documented in 30 states and in Washington, DC. Their website also says that by October 2008, there were 1,079 cases of confirmed dog flu.
Canine influenza can be spread by food and water bowls, collars and leashes and people petting infected dogs and transfering the virus to other healthy animals. Signs of illness can include runny noses, coughing, and low-grade fever similar to humans who get sick with the flu.
According to the AVMA, the USDA approved a vaccine for dog flu which you can get at most veterinary clinics.
