TAMPA, FL -- Veterans who have trained at Ft. Hood feel even more connected to the tragedy in Texas.

Tina Hood, a student veteran, went through the readiness program 5 years ago.

Before going to Baghdad, she trained in the same building where the massacre happened.

Hood hopes both soldiers and veterans are looked after more closely to prevent future tragedies from happening.

"A lot of these big bases are pretty well protected, but at the same time, when you have one of your own do this, I wonder why something wasn't done beforehand," Hood said.

Hood served in the national guard with a hospital unit. She is now a student at St. Petersburg College. Hood along with other student veterans on Friday spoke at a conference at The University of South Florida.

The conference is being held to try and improve services for veteran students on college campuses.
