TAMPA, FL -- Hillsborough County's new plan to catch red light runners with cameras taking photos of offenders is not enforceable, said Hillsborough Circuit Chief Judge James Dominguez.
Sheriff David Gee, this week, ordered ten cameras installed at busy intersections around Hillsborough County. The cameras will take snap shots of vehicles running red lights. The vehicle owners will receive $201 tickets in the mail.
At the Hillsborough Public Safety coordinating Council meeting today, Judge Dominguez called the plan noble, but added, "There is no enforcement. You get the ticket, you get it in the mail, you throw it in the trash can. Nothing happens."
Under state law photo enforcement of red light running is considered a code violation rather than a criminal violation. Failing to pay the ticket won't affect your driving record or subject you to arrest. However, the county could sent a collection agent your way.
