MIAMI, FL -- Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are monitoring an area of showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave in the western Caribbean.

The storms have increased over the past 24 hours.  The system is producing storms from Cuba and the Cayman Islands southwestward to Honduras.

Conditions are favorable for some slow development over the next 24 hours.

There is a medium chance - 30-50 percent - of the system becoming a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours.

Locally heavy rain is possible over the next several days over areas of Central America into Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula.
