MANATEE COUNTY, FL -- The old saying if it's too good to be true, then it probably is would apply to a new warning on an old trick where dubious suspects call unsuspecting victims claiming to have found winners for the Publishers Clearing House.

The caller says the person receiving the call just won $500,000 and to claim the prize all they have to do is pay a fee of $1000 to receive the windfall.

A credit card or checking account number is required to speed up the process.

Detectives investigating the ruse say Publisher's Clearing House doesn't call winners and they are currently not offering a $500,000 prize.

Anyone who has questions or believe they are a victim can contact Manatee County Sheriff's Office Detective Dave Johnson at 941-747-3011, extension 2551.
